Hao Liu

Hi, are there any specifications about how to model BIM models in terms of object information and modeling style for specific applications or in general?

For example, for quantity take-off, the specification specifies that the elements should contain concrete grade attributes etc. and the slab should be modeled with higher priority than beam in beam-slab joints like the attached picture shows.

Are there such modeling specifications or guidelines? Thank you.

  • 42.68 KB

Relevant answer

Thank you Temitope Akanbi . Yes I know LOD. But there seem no relevant specifications for the object information and modeling style mentioned in the question? Could you list some?

Many informal settlements have insufficient capacity to forecast, check, handle and reduce disaster risk. These communities face a growing range of challenges including economic hardship, technological and social impediments, urbanisation, under-development, wildfire, climate change, flooding, drought, geological hazards and the impact of epidemics such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, sometimes termed 'the burden of disease'. The inability of these communities to withstand adversities affects the sustainability of initiatives to develop them.

This is a question I would have asked during my masters degree research on Resilience in Disasters. I would like to know the opinions of other researchers as I would like to properly answer this question in a different research-related topic.

Relevant answer

Can you Share with us a world class achievement or a well known World recognized project in which you contributed or participated effectively in its success?

Relevant answer

As a method of the research we used Automated system-cognitive analysis (ASC-analysis), which is a new innovative method of artificial intelligence: it also has its own software tool – an intelligent system called "Eidos" (open source software) [1, 2, 3].

The Eidos-X++ system differs from other artificial intelligence systems in the following parameters:

- was developed in a universal setting, independent of the subject area. Therefore, it is universal and can be applied in many subject areas (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/index.htm);

- is one of the first domestic systems of artificial intelligence of the personal level, i.e. it does not take special training in the field of technologies of artificial intelligence from the user (there is an act of introduction of system "Eidos" of 1987) (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/aidos02/PR-4.htm);

- provides stable identification in a comparable form of strengh and direction of cause-effect relationships in incomplete noisy interdependent (nonlinear) data of very large dimension of numerical and non-numerical nature, measured in different types of scales (nominal, ordinal and numerical) and in different units of measurement (i.e. does not impose strict requirements to the data that can not be performed, and processes the data that is);

- contains a large number of local (supplied with the installation) and cloud educational and scientific applications (currently 31 and 199, respectively) (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/Presentation_Aidos-online.pdf);

- provides multilingual interface support in 44 languages. Language databases are included in the installation and can be replenished automatically;

- supports on-line environment of knowledge accumulation and is widely used all over the world (http://aidos.byethost5.com/map5.php);

- the most time-consuming computationally, the operations of the synthesis models and implements recognition by using graphic processing unit (GPU) that some tasks can only support up to the solution of these tasks is several thousand times that really provides intelligent processing of big data, big information and big knowledge;

- provides transformation of the initial empirical data into information, and its knowledge and solution using this knowledge of classification problems, decision support and research of the subject area by studying its system-cognitive model, generating a very large number of tabular and graphical output forms (development of cognitive graphics), many of which have no analogues in other systems (examples of forms can be found in: http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/aidos18_LLS/aidos18_LLS.pdf);

- well imitates the human style of thinking: gives the results of the analysis, understandable to experts on the basis of their experience, intuition and professional competence.

it is frequently reported that some international construction projects experiences time overrun due to delay in appointment of consultant by client. Our primary task is to prevent occurrence of this cause to prevent the arisen consequences. If the efforts were unsuccessful, mitigation measures should be taken. what are your taken prevention and mitigation suggestions?

#delay #time #overrun #construction #project #management #mitigation

Relevant answer

I think if there is such risk in construction project they should increase time contingency. Because in that range the client may recruit the consultant while the constructor also may be free from penalty in that time range.

Upon your site experience, How can you repair the concrete defects on manhole walls?

Relevant answer

I did not design buildings.

Hussam Ali Mohammed

Upon your site experience, What are the main criteria need to be considered when design building against seismic?

Relevant answer

As written in:

SEISMIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES

by Gabor Lorant

" The essence of successful seismic design is three-fold. First, the design team must take a multi-hazard approach towards design that accounts for the potential impacts of seismic forces as well as all the major hazards to which an area is vulnerable. Second, performance-based requirements, which may exceed the minimum life safety requirements of current seismic codes, must be established to respond appropriately to the threats and risks posed by natural hazards on the building's mission and occupants. Third, and as important as the others, because earthquake forces are dynamic and each building responds according to its own design complexity, it is essential that the design team work collaboratively and have a common understanding of the terms and methods used in the seismic design process. "

Also

"

SEISMIC DESIGN FACTORS

The following factors affect and are affected by the design of the building. It is important that the design team understands these factors and deal with them prudently in the design phase.

Torsion: Objects and buildings have a center of mass, a point by which the object (building) can be balanced without rotation occurring. If the mass is uniformly distributed then the geometric center of the floor and the center of mass may coincide. Uneven mass distribution will position the center of mass outside of the geometric center causing "torsion" generating stress concentrations. A certain amount of torsion is unavoidable in every building design. Symmetrical arrangement of masses, however, will result in balanced stiffness against either direction and keep torsion within a manageable range.

Damping: Buildings in general are poor resonators to dynamic shock and dissipate vibration by absorbing it. Damping is a rate at which natural vibration is absorbed.

Ductility: Ductility is the characteristic of a material (such as steel) to bend, flex, or move, but fails only after considerable deformation has occurred. Non-ductile materials (such as poorly reinforced concrete) fail abruptly by crumbling. Good ductility can be achieved with carefully detailed joints.

Strength and Stiffness: Strength is a property of a material to resist and bear applied forces within a safe limit. Stiffness of a material is a degree of resistance to deflection or drift (drift being a horizontal story-to-story relative displacement).

Building Configuration: This term defines a building's size and shape, and structural and nonstructural elements. Building configuration determines the way seismic forces are distributed within the structure, their relative magnitude, and problematic design concerns.

  • Regular Configuration buildings have Shear Walls or Moment-Resistant Frames or Braced Frames and generally have:
    • Low Height to Base Ratios
    • Equal Floor Heights
    • Symmetrical Plans
    • Uniform Sections and Elevations
    • Maximum Torsional Resistance
    • Short Spans and Redundancy
    • Direct Load Paths
  • Irregular Configuration buildings are those that differ from the "Regular" definition and have problematic stress concentrations and torsion."

Upon your site experience, What is the maximum storage time for cement in site?

Relevant answer

This really depends upon the type of cement and the conditions under which it is stored. At 20oC there should not be a problem so long as the relative humidity is maintained below 60%. Above this then there will be prehydration of the cement. This will lengthen the setting time and reduce strength development. If the relative humidity approaches 80% then the silicates in the cement will start to prehydrate and the loss in strength could well be ~30%.

At higher temperatures then it is likely that the effects will be more pronounced.

If I am Interested in Construction and Structuctural Engineering what should be my Final Year Project? Please suggest Best Project Example?

Relevant answer

Dear Zeeshan,

There are many topics which concern both construction and structuctural engineering that could be a final year graduate project for a student in civil engineering. I personally prefer the applicability of structuctural engineering's outputs in construction. Also, there is the relation between the variation in construction methods and the developments in structuctural engineering.

You may chose the restrictions of structuctural engineering on the sector of construction in your country or the world.

Technically, how can we stop leakage started on a basement due to increasing water table outside the building?

Relevant answer

The problem is great and I think the best solution is to reduce the level of groundwater. This can be done by digging wells around the building to prevent the groundwater from flowing into the site and then withdraw it by sucking pumps. Or it is possible to solve the problem using special liquids that freeze the water inside the soil, but this process needs time and high costs.

Late in 2012, the coastal town of Lynn, Mass., petitioned Marinetek, a Finland-based manufacturer of harbor products, to replace its aging dock systems located within the town's seaport marina. An important question for both the town and contractor became, "Which solution will provide the durability and functionality necessary to withstand the elements and get the job done right?"

Relevant answer

The precast prestresses concrete structures with high strength of concrete can be designed in such a way that resulting stresses remain compressive through out the depth of the section. Thereby we can ensure that there is no tensile stress and no crack at all. Possiblility of ingress of hostile ions can be prevented for much longer time and also corrosion can be prevented.

Performance based designed of concrete is another area wherein precast concrete can be designed for intended performance.

In your opinion, what are the most beneficial, most relevant, most applicable areas of the AEC research and practice in which Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality can assist, introduce significant benefits and/or facilitate major advancements/advantages?

Relevant answer

Thanks Peter Zeile and Aryan Shahabian for your posts.

I agree with both however it is much more difficult to work in some areas than the others when it comes to VR and more specifically in AR. I've recently reviewed a couple of papers in this area which although we're good attempts missed on the research methodology 101 and that was a shame!

We have also published a couple of papers recently mostly in conferences to test the ground and believe that there definitely are new boundaries to be explores and new grounds to cover.

At SET, UoB, we have recently won some investment fund for developing AR/VR research in our school and acquired a good mix of AR/VR Technologies (HoloLens included). We are still to set up our new lab physically but good news is that we will be up and running soon.

on another account in an independent research group I lead we are also concentrating on self-commissioned research in this area.

The discussion here was what we have in our group as a regular topic and have recently decided to dedicate our next project to a couple of ideas which will hopefully come to fruition soon.

Ill keep updating the post both in here and in a project I've set up on RG.

Thanks again and hope we can develop some areas of joint research activities in the near future.

1. 7-8 years ago, I attended a National BIM symposium/seminar in Manchester in UK where one of the speakers who was the BIM manager for a leading multinational construction company used the phrase "BIM, BAM, BOOM" in her presentation which made everyone more laugh than think.

2. Couple of years later I attended a prominent conference where someone was introduced by the Head of School of the host university as a BIM guru/leading expert in the UK despite having no direct background in [building or construction] engineering. Just a few minutes after this introduction, the BIM guru, who was reporting to the conference organising committee, failed to zoom in on a MS Excel spreadsheet as per request of one of the audience who could not see the figures simply because he didn't know how to do it! Someone needed to go on the stage to do it for him!

3. Today BIM experts, researchers and policy makers who have got no idea about the paradigmatic differences between BIM and what it has succeeded are in abundance.

4. We hear/see/feel/sense/witness that BIM has not been able to deliver its promise and this is somewhat evidenced by the feedback we receive from the industry.

My question is: "Has BIM really outlived its true value/promise or is it suffering from being bastardised (sorry this is not an F-word but quite an academic term) and subject to misuse/abuse as a result of our misunderstandings or lack of complete picture it entails?"

Please join me in this open discussion with your opinions, stories and experiences on this topic.

Great question and very good critical observations. BIM is not the "magic bullet" that it was portrayed as when it hit the market. It is just a tool, not a philosophy. BIM is merely a highly effective computer design tool that can be linked with estimating and scheduling tools to assist the project manager, but it still requires human intervention and a discipline to feed the tool and evaluate its output. Like all the other magic bullets that have arisen in our industry, critical path scheduling, partnering, alliancing, lean construction, to name a few, BIM does not guarantee success. Its the people on the project team that make that happen. We seem to forget that no matter what gimmicks we employ in the project delivery process, the project team must still plan, design, construct, commission, and maintain the completed project. That is and always has been a very difficult, very complex effort. The tools help sort out the complexities, but only if their practitioners understand and appreciate their limitations. I spent 20 years in the construction industry before moving to academia and have found that my academic colleagues tend to assume reality out of the project management equation because it greatly simplifies the analysis and leads to gee-whiz, publishable findings. I'll end this missive before I go off the deep end on this line of reasoning. Thank you very much for initiating this dialog. It is greatly needed. Cheers

I want to done a Tesis about of the Caña Guadúa such as a material of construction, because it is a renoval material an it is less expensive.

Relevant answer

Bamboo construction has great potential. Indeed, it is already widely used across much of the world. It is one of the fastest growing renewable resources and its properties make it suitable for use in a range of civil engineering applications (housing, civic buildings and low-rise office blocks). The use of bamboo as reinforcement in place of steel offers an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of construction, but durability may be compromised.

In terms of a thesis (you don't say whether it's a Masters or PhD), you need to consider what research will be novel. Consider whether you wish to focus on structural performance, materials properties, structural design, lifecycle assessment, etc. All of these fields will offer the potential for research, just make sure that you are not "reinventing the wheel".

In terms of resources, there are a number of publications in the field. SKAT produced a nice practical guide a few years ago. I don't normally like linking to unauthorised copies of books, but the link below should give you access.

BIM is a step which could be taken only after architectural and structural design finishes. I want to incorporate BIM in project estimation and scheduling more efficiently and accurately. But there is a problem with BIM, it don't say anything about construction process, materials, equipment, labor, employees, time of event etc. If we can incorporate these things in BIM somehow, then we can be more specific an d almost accurate in scheduling and estimation.

Relevant answer

Hello Abhaysingh Thakur,

It is very cool to share knowledge with other researchers.

When we talk about BIM we have to consider a set of different software developed to deliver different uses of BIM.

Vico Software: 5D BIM Construction Software | Virtual Construction

For BIM estimation you can use:

Sir

i am doing project on material management. can we compare the cost of materials used in cast in situ and precast construction. if so, please suggest suitable solution whether we can continue for project work.

Thanks

Relevant answer

The first question that needs to be answered is whether the in-situ concrete and precast concrete are expected to achieve the same strength. The second is whether exactly the same types of materials are being used in the two methods (this will possibly not be true especially for reinforcement). If the two types of concrete making are expected to make concrete of the same strength, and the aggregates (coarse and fine) are also expected to be similar, you may find that the cost of materials for insitu concrete is more than that for precast. However, you need to test the significance of the difference in cost because it may be insignificant, except of course for rebar and additives (if required). Overall, I don't expect a wide difference in the cost of aggregates and binder using the two methods, but I do expect a wide difference in the labour and reinforcement costs of the two methods.
